The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is recognised as the world's leading processing standard for textiles made from organic fibres. It defines high-level environmental criteria along the entire organic textiles supply chain and requires compliance with social criteria as well.

Only textile products that contain a minimum of 70% organic fibres can become GOTS certified. All chemical inputs such as dye stuffs and auxiliaries used must meet certain environmental and toxicological criteria. The choice of accessories is limited in accordance with ecological aspects as well. A functional waste water treatment plant is mandatory for any wet-processing unit involved and all processors must comply with social criteria. The key criteria of GOTS, its quality assurance system and the principles of the review and revision procedure are summarised in this section.

With completion of GOTS certification, the certified entity acquires a licence which entitles it to participate in the GOTS program, including use of the standard and the GOTS logo on its respective GOTS Goods. The picture shown below is the accreditations held by the company that made the Kavu Clothing material.

The company, Shaoxing Ecou Textile Co Ltd, currently make a range of materials from diverse plant materials including bamboo, eucalyptus, cotton, and hemp. They hold numerous awards and accreditations for their eco-friendly materials. The Kavu materials are made from 49% bamboo and 49% eucalyptus (lyocell) plus 2% spandex.

This ratio of mix was established to be the most effective in removing sweat from the body and allowing the body to self temperature regulate.

HOW IT WORKS...... This particular mix allows:

* The material allows the body regulates its temperature so that hot sweats are corrected in minimal time.

* The material is woven in such a way that it breathes, moving water from your body into the material. It has a good absorption quality. This makes you feel cooler for longer.

* Bamboo is naturally anti-bacterial.

* Water (or your sweat) gets absorbed into tiny micro-pores in the fibre. Unlike cotton which absorbs the water and the whole material becomes water logged.

* Both of the materials used (bamboo and eucalyptus) are made from the same base material - plant cellulose, which loves water.
